Quote by Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance. He was the first African American to earn his living solely from his writing and public lectures that was paved by the Harlem Renaissance.
Langston Hughes stood at the apex of literary relevance among Black people. The poet occupies such a position in the memory of his people precisely because he recognized that ‘we possess within ourselves a great reservoir of physical and spiritual strength,’ and because he used his artistry to reflect this back to the people.
In 1925, Hughes’ poem “The Weary Blues” won first prize in Charles S. Johnson’s Opportunity magazine literary competition.
One way that Langston Hughes elevated the Harlem Renaissance was by going on a tour in 1931 to read his poetry across the South. His fee was ostensibly $50, but he would lower the amount, or forego it entirely, at places that couldn’t afford it. His tour and willingness to deliver free programs when necessary helped many get acquainted with the Harlem Renaissance. Langston Hughes’ tour helped make the movement itself more well known.
A breakthrough in serious music occurred when tenor Roland Hayes sang at New York Town Hall in 1923, and later took spirituals into the concert hall. That breakthrough was initiated by Charles S. Johnson.
HCI Forums will be the vehicle to put forth black entrepreneurs to be able to be seen by audiences that they would not have been able to access. Similar to what Charles S. Jonson did for such artistic titans such as Langston Hughes and Roland Hayes, the HCI will provide the stage for entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurs will get to bring new concepts, technologies, ingenuity, new and expanded culture to audiences that will see the value and market benefits from the creative business and commerce new engines that will be coming forth.

Roland Hayes, the first world-renowned African American classical singer. Hayes was the first black person to sing with a major orchestra. His first breakthrough came via Charles S. Johnson and the Harlem Renaissance.
